The Avalonia MailRouter is an extension to mail servers such as Apples Internet Mail Server (AIMS), Eudora Internet Mail Server (EIMS) or Stalker Internet Mail Server (SIMS), providing extra functionality to handle many domains on one single machine. Apart from assigning mailboxes to each user on the different domains, MailRouter can also redirect mail based on account or domain names, handle subdomains, divide users on a big domain to a set of servers and handle unregistered addresses.

The history behind Avalonia MailRouter

Some years ago I set up electronic mail for my company on a Macintosh machine. As the software available wasn't able to provide the service we needed, I had to develop mail software for several specific needs, such as a gateway between UUCP and SMTP, a list server with some special functionality, a blacklist filter protecting the whole company, handling of multiple domains, etc.

As I also function as a consultant for setting up Internet access on Macintosh machines, the software was primarely developed as a tool I could use when setting up and customizing mail servers for our customers.

During 1996 I looked into releasing the software, named UUDP, either as ShareWare or as a shinkwrapped package. Because of the flexibility of the software - too many expert options ;-) - this was found to be unfeasable.

Late 1996 I decided to use the expertise I have gained through several years of developing mail software enhancements in another way. When using the software to configure our clients mail servers, I discovered that not two customers had the same needs. When faced with the possibilities in the software every customer chose their own subset of functions. This makes it hard to market as a single program with all the functionality, as only experts would be able to use the program efficiently.

I therefore - in collaboration with Avalonia Net - made the decition to explore the possibility of developing, and releasing as ShareWare, a set of "MailTools" - small extensions to Apples Internet Mail Server, each implementing a single of the features in UUDP.

As an experiment I released the Avalonia MailRouter as the first mail tool. The result was mixed. As I received only a few registrations, I concentrated on supporting those customers, and have sent them a few updates that extended the functionality of MailRouter. These updates have only been available to registered licensees. The last ShareWare version of MailRouter is 1.04, which have problems with system 8.1. The last update sent to the registered licensees is version 1.06, which will work with the newest systems and newer mail servers such as EIMS, EIMS Pro and SIMS.

As there are quite a few still using the free EIMS and SIMS packages, I have decided to release Avalonia MailRouter 1.1 to the public. Unfortunately I'm not able to release the product as ShareWare, but have instead decided to send out a free trial version, so that anyone can try all features in version 1.1. To obtain a full version of the Avalonia MailRouter 1.1 a license fee must be payed to Kagi.

The license fees for the Avalonia MailRouter 1.1 are US$30 for a one copy license, US$75 for unlimited copies running at the same site and US$150 for a world wide license for one organisation.

The MailTools mailing list

The purpose of the MailTools mailing mailing list is to provide a forum for discussion of mail server software for MacOS, such as Apple Internet Mail Server (AIMS), Eudora Internet Mail Server (EIMS) and Stalker Internet Mail Server (SIMS), and extensions that provide enhanced functionality.

To receive subscription information, send a message to the address:

UUDP@cutisan.dk

with the body of the message consisting of the word:

INFO MailTools-L

Subscribing to the mailing list will also give you access to fetching the current trial version of MailRouter.
